I poured a couple fingers into one of the small leaded crystal tasting cups and the fragrance fully bloomed into a wonderfully evocative symphony of classic whiskey purfumes. Whoa, I again nodded to the imposing bottle. So then I sipped it and my mouth flooded with some of the most satisfyingly balanced flavors I’d yet experienced in my admittedly meager whiskey history. But I had sampled fine 12 and 18 year old Single Malts and Blends and so I had at least a working knowledge of what to expect of a fine or even finer dram. This one certainly deserved consideration among that higher pedigree class, it was so delightfully smooth and subtle yet seductively complex. Gold Award at the International Spirits Challenge (2018), Gold Award at the World Whiskies Awards (2017)This award-winning blended Scotch whisky combines some of Scotland’s best flavors. It’s an affordable bottle that works well when enjoyed alone or with a few drops of water. Or, bring out the citrus notes by mixing with soda water. Throw in some toasted spices and candied fruit and you’ve got yourself a winner in Oban’s single malt. A complete nonentity. Imagine the dullest blended Scotch whisky and then add a deluge of water. The very best I can say for this is that it is appropriately cheap. Score: 4/10 Buchanan’s has been making a name for itself in the whisky world for the past 130 years and is widely recognized as another favorite across the planet. It’s affordable with round and complex offerings that’ll leave a strong first impression on your tastebuds. This Speyside whisky is another great choice from Balvenie’s offerings. It’s a classic after-dinner malt with a richness and complexity stemming from its second distillation in sherry casks. It’s known for its long line of successful bottles and its 12-Year-Old might just be the top choice of them all. Whisky Review: Ballantine’s Finest Blended Scotch Whisky

The Blue Label is the brand’s most prestigious blended whisky, coming in with a higher price point that’s more than worthy of the flavors to follow. Blended: As the name suggests, blended whisky is a blend of two or more malt and grain whiskies. Blended whiskies are overlooked by a master blender to ensure a consistent flavor throughout. Due to the nature of the drink, blended whiskies are often cheaper than their single-malt counterparts. After my father passed in 2009 I eventually found myself exploring his modest but eclectic collection of spirits and cordials. Most prominent was a nearly half full 1.5 liter bottle of Ballentine’s that I deducted hailed from the early to mid 70s. I assumed it had to have gone to pot, for no specific informed reason. But when I twisted open the cap I was greeted by a rich fragrance which grew in depth and power as it permeated my inner cavities. Whoa, I said to the bottle. An amber-gold whisky, the 14 Year has mainly malt-based flavors with a focus on oak, spice, and fruit. It’s another sophisticated drink from a brand determined to pave the way towards single malt domination.

It’s an accomplished blend that’s easily drinkable and definitely worthy of its highly regarded profile.
